ANC calls for action in murder probe

22 May 2013

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the Gauteng legislature today called for speedy investigation and arrests in the killing of an ANC councillor in Westonaria.

Mboniswa Jackson Mafika, ANC Chief Whip at the Westonaria Municipality and the Chairperson of the ANC Sub Region in Westonaria was gunned down by unknown assailants at his home last Wednesday and no arrests have been made to date. Mafika a long time trade unionist was also the chairperson of the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) branch and it is believe his murder is politically motivated.

"We believe that any form of crime, especially murder is intolerable but settling political differences through violence is the worst enemy of the democratic society and it should not be left to survive even a single day. It is now a week since comrade Mafika has been killed and we still do not know who is responsible for this sickening act of cowardice," Chief Whip Brian Hlongwa said today.

Mafika was a dedicated NUM leader who ensured its recognition at the Goldfields Kloof Mine where in 1992 he worked with the team that ensured that NUM membership escalated from 3000 to almost 12000. He also worked tirelessly with the communities there to forge workers and community unity. He is survived by wife and three children.

"As we mourn his passing and send our heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and comrades of Westonaria, we call upon the Gauteng police and Public Safety officials to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the murderers of comrade Mafika are brought to book. We must emphasize that we make this call in the interest of democracy. Our law enforcement agencies must ensure that no one settles political differences with violence and gets away with it," Hlongwa said.

Mafika will be laid to rest at his home village of Nowalala location in the Eastern Cape on Saturday 01 June 2013 and a memorial service will be on Thursday 23rd of May 2013 at 14h00, Kloof Mine Dance Arena.
