Circumcision deaths dismayed Gauteng ANC Caucus

African National Congress (ANC) Caucus in the Gauteng Legislature today reacted with shock and called for a speedy investigation into the deaths of over 23 young people in botched circumcision rituals Mpumalanga this week.

According to media reports about 23 youths have died over a period of nine days at initiation ceremonies in Mpumalanga. ANC Chief Whip at the Gauteng Legislature Brian Hlongwa said they party sent condolences to the families of the deceased and has joined the Mpumalanga Government in calling for speedy investigation to the circumstances that led to the deaths.

"We take comfort in the knowledge that the Mpumalanga Government has taken steps in ensuring that institutions where these rituals are registered and regulated. This, in our view, will make it somewhat easier to get to the bottom of the negligence if any by those involved. We are resolute in the view that whilst it remains utterly important that tradition is respected when these rituals are performed, but regulation is non-negotiable as a means to preserve human life," Hlongwa said.

He said the deaths are a national tragedy and everything needs to be done to ensure that a thorough understanding of circumstances that led to it are revealed and addressed urgently.
